Your stay in France: practical information

Preparing your stay in France

Procedure

After being accepted by the laboratory or enrolling in a doctoral programme, the future grantholder must obtain social security insurance (illness, work-related accidents, etc.), as well as liability insurance.

The guest laboratory will provide the candidate with the "Protocol d'accueil" (Guest Researcher Protocol), to be completed and presented at the French consulate in the candidate's country of origin in order to obtain a visa.

Before leaving for France, the candidate must provide certain administrative documents (for more information, contact the "foreign researcher" correspondent at the local human resources office of the INRA Centre where he/she will be going):

  • Curriculum Vitae;
  • Research programme;
  • Visa;
  • Birth certificate, translated into French;
  • Personal data sheet.

This list is not exhaustive.

Upon the candidate's arrival in France, a certain number of administrative requirements must be fulfilled. The correspondent will provide the candidate with the necessary assistance:

  • Accommodation;
  • Residency permit application;
  • IMO (International Migration Office) medical examination; the guest laboratory is responsible for paying the IMO fee;
  • Social Security card.

This list is not exhaustive.

Two associations devote their activities to foreign guest researchers working in France:

With the support of the Alfred Kastler Foundation (FnAK), Agropolis organises French classes in Montpellier for foreign guest researchers working in member establishments. All educational expenses are covered.
