Multisward, a European project to improve the exploitation of grasslands
This four-year project, launched in March 2010 and coordinated by Jean-Louis Peyraud from the INRA Joint Research Unit for Milk Production (UMR PL), aims to propose innovations for the management of multifunctional grassland-based ruminant production systems. With a budget of €3 million, this project involves participants from eleven European countries, including six INRA teams.

Coordinated by INRA, Multisward is the first European project to have focused on grasslands for more than 15 years. Its aim is to develop innovative ruminant production systems based on the valorisation of grasslands. Associating animal and plant research in a variety of disciplines (agronomy, ecology, animal husbandry, animal nutrition, plant genetics, economics, modelling), the project will enable an inventory of grasslands in Europe, an assessment of their benefits and a review of expectations concerning them. The aim will be to produce knowledge, to propose innovations and tools, to promote grassland management methods that will increase competitiveness and to optimize the provision of environmental goods and the preservation of biodiversity.
This project includes an important dimension of transfer, communication and valorisation towards citizens and different stakeholders (livestock farmers, political decision-makers, regulators, industry, environmental groups and consumers) in order to disseminate knowledge and facilitate the development of future European policies.
