Launched in April 2005 and coordinated by INRA at Versailles, the European project “Co-extra” was set up in response to a call for proposals for the “Food Quality and Safety” Priority of the 6th Framework Programme. Focusing on the co-existence and traceability of GMOs, Co-extra is a large-scale integrated project, bringing together 52 partners from 17 different countries.
The European Union is contributing a total of €13.5m over 4 years for the project.
The objectives of Co-extra are:
- Developing tools and methods for decision support systems aimed at enabling co-existence between GM and non GM (conventional and organic) crops.
- Ensuring traceability of products made with GMO crops along the entire food and feed chains.
- Giving European consumers the freedom of choice regarding GMOs.
Working in close collaboration with the entire food and feed chains will guarantee that the results from the Co-extra project are reliable, technically, economically and legally.
