The European Animal Disease Genomics Network of Excellence, or EADGENE, coordinated by INRA at Jouy-en-Josas, proposes using genomics as an alternative treatment for animal diseases. Based on a network of scientific excellence, it addresses issues of animal and human health and aims to improve the quality and safety of products of animal origin. To do this, EADGENE will study the main livestock species including fish. It receives funding from the European Union in the amount of €11.52m, and brings together 130 scientists (13 scientists from each of 10 different countries). Establishing a virtual European laboratory will enable teams to pool their resources and identify common strategies at EU level. Furthermore, partnerships with breeders, consumers and industry professionals will produce safer foods resulting from more sustainable animal husbandry models. EADGENE was officially launched on 5 October 2004 at the Jouy-en-Josas Research Centre, in the presence of François d’Aubert, French Minister of Research, Achilléas Mitsos, Director-General for Research at the European Commission, Marion Guillou, President and CEO of INRA, as well as all of the scientists participating in the project.
