FUTUROL PROJECT pilot plant: a decisive step towards second generation bioethanol production

© Procethol 2G, M. Jolyot
The FUTUROL PROJECT aims to develop and market an end-to-end process for producing second generation bioethanol. On 11 October 2011, the project forged ahead to a new stage in its development with the commissioning of a first French pilot plant on the Pomacle-Bazancourt site. This decisive step makes the production of second generation bioethanol a reality and will validate, on a pre-industrial scale, the findings of research conducted since 2008. Over the next three years, the technology choices needed to kick-off industrial production will be confirmed.

Launched in 2008, the FUTUROL PROJECT brings together 11 players that cover the entire production chain, from vegetable matter to fuel pump. Financial backers, industrialists and research laboratories enrich the project with their specific skills and expertise, developed over many years in the biofuels industry.

Sustainable, local supply chains

The FUTUROL PROJECT promotes the use of multiple raw material resources. With a view to ensuring sustainable supplies and preventing competition with food production, the FUTUROL PROJECT aims to use diversified vegetable matter resources: joint products of agriculture, forestry resources, waste.

The FUTUROL PROJECT aims to develop a production chain that can be tailored to local contexts. It should be possible to produce second generation bioethanol locally anywhere in the world, even within first generation production plants, adapting the raw materials used to the season.

The pilot plant: a step forward towards second generation production

Building work on the pilot plant began in autumn 2008, on the Pomacle site in north-eastern France (Marne). The 5,000 m2 plant is part of the Bazancourt agro-industrial complex.

The pilot plant will be used to test the compliance of technology decisions on a 1:1000 scale, producing 180,000 litres/year. The aim is to validate laboratory findings on a pre-industrial scale and determine the technology needed to enable subsequent industrial implementation. Production optimisation possibilities will also be studied during this phase, notably as regards energy consumption and resource flows. The pilot plant was inaugurated on 11 October 2011 and is now available to all research teams involved in the FUTUROL PROJECT.

About the FUTUROL PROJECT

Led by PROCETHOL 2G, the FUTUROL PROJECT brings together 11 partners from various domains: R&D laboratories (ARD, IFP Energies Nouvelles, Inra and Lesaffre), industrialists (Champagne Céréales, ONF, Tereos, Total) and financial backers (Crédit Agricole du Nord Est, CGB, Unigrains). The project aims to develop and market an end-to-end process for producing second generation bioethanol.
