Research divisions lie at the heart of the economic partnership strategy of INRA. These divisions define their own partnership strategies and then implement them through their "partnership managers". The "researcher-partnership manager" duo is thus crucial to the development of research partnerships with companies and any resulting economic exploitation.

INRA is made up of more than 300 research units, which constitute the operational structures of the Institute. These units are grouped into 14 research divisions, organised on the basis of the scientific areas they cover. Geographically, INRA units are based in 20 research centres, spread throughout France.

Research division heads are responsible for implementing the Institute's partnership policy and ensuring its coherence with overall INRA research policies.
Partnership managers, working in a network, report to the division heads and assist them with these activities, and notably the development and coordination of partnership and exploitation projects in research units.

The coherence and general management of the system are ensured by the Directorate for Valorisation (DV), with the aid of two units:

The DISI also oversees the INRA subsidiaries specialised in technology transfer: INRA-Transfert and Agri Obtentions.
