For many years, INRA researchers have been participating in individual expert assessments, which do not involve the institute.
Businesses and organisations turn to INRA researchers for expert opinions because of their cutting-edge scientific skills and experience acquired at INRA. Researchers’ immersion in top-quality research and constant contact with peers and public and private partners in mission-oriented research guarantee the pertinence of their opinions.
Researchers are usually asked to provide expert opinions (in an individual capacity) for a group, such as multidisciplinary committees. These opinions generally contribute to supporting government decisions about the well-being and safety of citizens and protection of the environment.
The main organisations that INRA experts work with include the French food safety authority (AFSSA), the French environmental authority (AFSSE), the Commission in charge of evaluating the toxicity of phytosanitary products, and European and international institutions.
Since 2001, INRA has also participated in a collective institutional assignment which aims to provide scientific expert opinions as support for decisions made by public or private partners. It consists in assessing multidisciplinary scientific knowledge about a topic and reporting on certainties, uncertainties, controversies and shortcomings. It is an effective tool for meeting the increasing demand for expert opinions from civil society on complex issues often involving the environment and food.
