The Green Book of the CLIMATOR Project
Climate change, agriculture and forests in France: simulations of the impacts on the main species
For 20 years, there has been evidence of climate change from weather records. Its impact is beginning to be felt in agriculture and forestry: repeated droughts, advanced or delayed flowering and harvests, stagnating wheat yields, forest dieback, etc. What are the advantages and vulnerabilities of crops faced with climate change? How can cropping calendars, water requirements, pest and parasite pressure, yields evolve? Answering these questions on how crop and forest systems react to future climate change was the objective of the CLIMATOR project. This work has made it possible to develop methods of analysis, based on climatic simulations coupled with farm and forest models. The Green Book summarizes the results of the CLIMATOR project.

The CLIMATOR research project (2007-2010) brought together 17 teams from 7 institutes and organisations to provide methods and results on the impact of climate change on various cropping systems (annual crops, grasslands, forests, bananas, sugar cane, vines) and in contrasting French climates, including the tropical climate of the French West Indies. The work conducted is a prospective modelling exercise. The objective is to translate climatic hypotheses into quantified impacts to distinguish the beneficial, harmful or non-significant effects which these hypotheses lead to in French agriculture and forestry. The work was carried out on the scale of the plot taking into account the biological and technical dimensions.
As France has a diversity of climates and territories which are representative of different European regions, these results can inform other countries in Europe or in the world. The Green Book will also provide elements of analysis in the future IPCC report.
The results of the CLIMATOR project are summarized in this Green Book published by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME). Mid-way between a scientific publication and a book for the general public, the results are presented in the form of sections organised into four chapters: methodology, topics, crops, regions.
