Science and society: from consultation to the interactive construction of research

How Interactive Technology Assessment on a GMO field trial has turned into research-action

In order to explore grapevine defence mechanisms against grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV), a highly aggressive disease, INRA’s scientists wanted to carry out a field trial of genetically-modified grapevine rootstocks in Alsace, a highly-reputed region of French viticulture. The Interactive Technology Assessment method was used in an initial consultation phase, before the field trial, to integrate public input. The implementation phase was then made possible by the involvement of a Local Monitoring Committee (LMC) with broad stakeholder representation. In the course of 7 years’ work, the LMC developed a research-action method based on both the acceptance of existing knowledge but also on the validity of other ways of thinking. Thus, the LMC, built a research-action programme which redesigned the initial GM grapevine research trial and developed innovative research on the environmental impact of GMO rootstocks as well as on the alternatives for controlling GFLV using organic viticulture.
