PLATANOR® Vallis clausa, a plane tree variety resistant to canker stain

A variety bred jointly by INRA and the Rouy Imbert Nurseries (Montfavet, Avignon)

Canker stain is a major threat to plane trees, particularly in Europe. By crossing American and Oriental planes, resistant clones were obtained and evaluated. From this selection was born the PLATANOR® Vallis clausa variety, bred jointly by INRA and Pépinières Rouy Imbert.

Over the past fifteen years, canker stain, caused by the fungus Ceratocystis platani, has become a major threat to European plane tree populations.  A few spores entering via a minor injury are sufficient to infect an entire tree, which will not resist the disease for more than 4 to 6 years, depending on the site of contamination. In France, more than 50 000 trees have so far died in this way.

The research of INRA scientists conducted in Montpellier and Montfavet (Avignon) has led to development of the PLATANOR® Vallis clausa variety, which was obtained by hybridizing a resistant American variety with an Oriental plane tree.  This new variety presents all the ornamental characteristics of the common plane (itself a hybrid). And it is also highly resistant to anthracnose and to a lesser extent to powdery mildew and lace bug. This plane tree variety also withstands urban pollution and wind.

The authenticity of each tree is guaranteed by the insertion of a microchip in the trunk.  The first commercial subjects were planted in Lyon and are being closely monitored.
