Missions and strategies

© Inra
INRA has a clearly identified mission-oriented vocation to serve society.

A public research institution

  • to produce and disseminate scientific knowledge,
  • to develop innovations and know-how for the benefit of society,
  • through its expertise, to inform decision-making by public and private sector players,
  • to develop scientific and technical culture and participate in the science/society debate,
  • to contribute to training in and through research.

Mission-oriented research, with a clearly-defined area of competence

  • research for and with society, with the support of diversified partnerships,
  • three strongly interacting areas of research: agriculture, food and nutrition, and the environment, in a setting of sustainable development,
  • specialised excellence and cross-disciplinary research in the life sciences, material sciences and social sciences,
  • open to Europe and the world.

Priorities for the future

  • to contribute to strengthening and developing French research resources,
  • to be an active player in building European research,
  • to identify and explore new research questions. INRA benefits from a four-year strategic orientation programme which serves as a basis for targeted contracts with its relevant Ministries.

Foresight is a tool used to define both long-term strategies and four-year trends. It makes it easier for the Institute's partners to participate.
