INRA in other countries

INRA has representatives and delegates in other countries, as well as researchers working in joint units.

INRA representatives in other countries

Based in countries of key importance to INRA activities, the Institute's representatives provide an interface with all local partners (institutional, scientific, industrial) and provide local logistical support for mandated INRA researchers.
Furthermore, through their knowledge of local research resources, these representatives contribute to identifying the ideal partners for future joint projects, and developing research topics of joint interest. In several countries, these representatives have a joint mandate from INRA and the CIRAD.

Joint international research laboratories

Joint international INRA units are still few in number but are increasingly likely to be set up, both in Europe and in the context of international research projects. Modern scientific research in areas such as integrative biology, high throughput genomics or proteomics requires increasing levels of resources and staffing and the coordinated convergence of several disciplines

The form preferred by INRA is a joint unit which groups one or more INRA research teams and one or more teams in a foreign research institution, with a working programme and budget which are defined jointly. If such units include laboratories in other French or foreign research institutions, they are called European or international research groups, and take on a network structure.

An international unit is set up for a period of four years (renewable), by a convention between INRA (and possibly other French partners) and the foreign partner(s). The project targeted is developed by the teams proposing it, validated by the head of the relevant department and then approved by the INRA Board of Directors. The teams involved retain their autonomy, status, chains of responsibility and site. Management is ensured jointly by two coordinators, nominated by each party (in the case of collaboration between two units) or by a Scientific Advisory Committee and a chairman in the case of a Research Group. The teams receive supplementary resources to ensure exchanges with the partner. Joint, equal funding is normally asked of the foreign partner.
